2015 Poetry Competition Application

Eligibility and Guidelines

  • The competition is open to any writer who is a legal resident of North Carolina, South Carolina or Georgia.
  • Only poems that have not been previously published in any form are eligible for consideration.
  • There are two categories for entries:
    • Adults
    • High School Students
  • Poems are to be typed in 12-point font (single spaced) and may not exceed 40 lines.  Please submit two copies of all poems.
  • Electronic submissions are not accepted; poems must be mailed and accompanied by the application form (downloadable from this website).  The author’s name should not appear on the poem.
  • There is an entry fee of $10 per poem ($5 for student entries). Multiple submissions are acceptable; competitors may submit up to 5 poems, accompanied by a $10/$5 fee per poem.
  • Prize money will be awarded as follows in both the adult and student competitions:
    • Adults
      • 1st place: $500
      • 2nd place: $250
      • 3rd place: $100
    • High School Students
      • 1st place: $100
      • 2nd place: $75
      • 3rd place: $50
    • In addition, one poem in each competition will be awarded Honorable Mention.
  • Entries will be accepted from January 6, 2015 until February 24, 2015 (deadline for postmarked or submitted in person).
  • Winners will be notified in March 2015.
  • The final competition judge will be Keith Flynn. He is an award-winning poet, and founder and editor of the Asheville Poetry Review.
  • Prizes will be awarded at the Lanier Library as part of the Lanier Poetry Festival on April 25, 2015.
